Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA)

Bermuda's integrated financial regulator overseeing insurance, reinsurance, banking, and digital asset businesses.

The Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) is Bermuda's integrated financial regulator, established in 1969. It supervises the insurance, reinsurance, banking, investment funds, and digital asset sectors — making it one of the few regulators globally with direct oversight across all of these domains simultaneously.

Bermuda is the world's leading domicile for ILS, catastrophe bonds, and large property catastrophe reinsurance. The BMA is responsible for licensing and supervising the reinsurers, ILS fund managers, cat bond SPVs, and collateral trustees that make this market function.

Beyond traditional (re)insurance, the BMA has developed dedicated frameworks for innovation — including the Innovative Insurer designation and the Digital Asset Business Act (DABA) — positioning Bermuda as the most advanced jurisdiction for the convergence of reinsurance capital and digital asset infrastructure.

The BMA maintains international equivalence with the EU Solvency II framework and is a member of the IAIS (International Association of Insurance Supervisors) and IOSCO, giving its regulated entities recognised standing in global markets.

Example usage

MembersCap is authorised and regulated by the BMA under both its insurance investment management framework and the Digital Asset Business Act.
